Collecting The American Civil War

I've seen far too many times particular items available online, whether via auction, classified ad or on a website, that are falsely labeled as civil war.

Far too many devious "antiques dealers" are nothing more than glorified pawn brokers lacking in any knowledge of a specific area. As a result, these "antiques dealers" will haphazardly guess about what an item is, its time period & more often they will inflate & over price the item hoping & praying to find a sucker.

These dealers habitually live in the dream that if it's old that it must be made of gold.

The American Civil War only lasted a short 4 years from 1861–1865 yet so many devious "antiques dealers" as well as fleabayers, among others, will advertise or list various objects from the later 1800s & advertise them as civil war when it is factually very far from the truth.

When one specifically collects civil war artifacts, memorobilia, etc, if it is before 1861 or after 1865, then it is not a civil war collectible...

Take for example the Springfield Trapdoor & its bayonet.. Far too many dealers claim these items to be of civil war origin, or they outright lie in their ad claiming that it saw action during the civil war.. Truth of the matter is that the Springfield Trapdoor was not around during the civil war as it did not become into production until 1870.

Anyone who collects American Civil War militaria or other historical memorabilia should have a library of material to research any particular item. A collector should educate him or herself on the areas they wish to pursue in collecting, whether it be firearms, swords, uniforms, currency, documents or any other item.
